The Queen Margaret University was founded in 1875 by two pioneering women (Christian Guthrie Wright and Louisa Stevenson) who had an aim of improving educational opportunities for women. The University is currently lead by Principal, Professor Petra Wend. Professor Wend took part in Harvard Business School’s Women’s Leadership Forum in 2008 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA) in 2009. In March 2015, she was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in recognition of her inspirational leadership in higher education (FRSE). In April 2015, Professor Petra was appointed by the Scottish Government as a member of the Commission for Widening Access. The Commission was set up in light of the Scottish Government’s commitment to improve access to educational opportunities for disadvantaged people. Professor Wend is a strong believer in equality of opportunity. Through her leadership she has shown great commitment in creating and supporting initiatives which help students achieve their full potential, no matter what their background is.
In 2016, Prue Leith, writer, restaurateur, cookery expert and judge on the hit TV show ‘Great British Menu’, was appointed as QMU’s new Chancellor. Dr. Claire Seaman, a reader in family business at QMU, is a member of our conference’s organising committee and a supporter of WomenBeing. Queen Margaret University was therefore a natural venue for a conference focusing upon studies in the area of gender, women and research.
The conference starts on the 10th of October – Ada Lovelace day – which celebrates women of the present and past, whose achievements have contributed so much to humanity. For us, Ada Lovelace is a great example of the achievements of women, and we want to create awareness and remembrance, in order to inspire women and girls to be fearless and follow their dreams.
